Ginger: Health Benefits & Uses

Ginger is a wonderful spice which has a large variety of health benefits and uses. Originating in China, it has been used for thousands of years in alternative medicine to heal many medical conditions



 1. Ginger is classed a super food due to its many health benefits and uses. When we talk about ginger, we are generally referring to the root of the ginger plant, where most of the healthy vitamins and nutrients are located.

2. Ginger is used as a spice in cooking due to its strong flavour and intensity.

3. It is also used as an alternative medicine due to its ability to alleviate and reduce morning sickness in pregnant women, it also helps with nausea in chemotherapy patients and those with sea-sickness.

4. You can consume fresh ginger, or for convenience you may purchase ginger tablets or pills and take them as a supplement on a daily basis.

5. Ginger spice which is used in many recipes, comes from the root being ground into a fine powder. This has a very distinctive aroma and flavour.

6. Ginger’s medicinal properties come from the oil contained within it, also referred to as gingerol. This particular oil is very strong in its antioxidant effects, and is therefore used as an anti-inflammatory. This helps with aches, pains and headaches in the body.

7. The anti-inflammatory effects may also help those with osteoarthritis.

8. Ginger acts as a stimulant to the digestive process in the body, and speeds up the time it takes to digest food. It is therefore used to treat indigestion

9. Those with high blood sugar, and diabetes may wish to consume ginger regularly as it has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels and improve overall health.

10. Ginger can be taken in various forms, including fresh, dried, powdered, oils and extracts. It can also be found pickled or crystallised. I recommend drinking ginger tea on a regular basis. You may also add some fresh lemon juice for extra flavour.

11. Many women drink ginger tea to help with menstrual pain. It has been stated that ginger is as powerful as the drug ibuprofen when it comes to relieving period pain.

12. High cholesterol is known to cause heart disease. Ginger is a powerful supplement and reduces cholesterol significantly.

13. Gingerol, the oil contained within raw ginger may help prevent cancer.

14. Ginger extract has been shown to lower the risk of infections due to its ability to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the body including conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis. It is also effective against some viruses.

15. Healthy smoothies are a great way to supplement your healthy lifestyle. A good tip would be to grate some fresh ginger root, and blend with your favourite fruits and vegetables.
