Mulberry Leaves: Benefits (Tea)


The health benefits and uses of Mulberry leaves, and a simple recipe to use at home.

1. Mulberries are absolutely delicious but many people do not realise that the leaves can also be used. They grow in China, Korea and Japan and have been used as a natural medicine for many years.

2. It is known for its anti-diabetic effects, as it can lower blood sugar levels. This happens because the leaves contain a natural compound called DNJ (1-deoxynojirimycin)

3. It also contains some health minerals including calcium, iron, and zinc. These are all great for boosting your health overall, especially the bones and immune system.

4. The leaves are usually made into a herbal tea. You can do this by adding a few leaves (fresh or dried) to a cup with hot water for a few minutes, and then straining to remove the particles.

5. It has been shown to lower blood sugar spikes in scientific studies and this can help you to maintain a normal appetite, as well as helping those with type 2 diabetes. 

6. Cholesterol is often a problem nowadays which causes heart problems. This tea reduces cholesterol levels slightly, however taking mulberry leaf extract in capsule form works best for this.

7. You can purchase mulberry leaf extract from many health food stores. They work particularly well when used in conjunction with curcumin, another super compound found in turmeric.

8. They are very anti-inflammatory, and will reduce redness in the skin all over the body. This also helps to keep the brain healthy and at a lower risk of developing dementia. 

9. This can also work to treat a mild headache, rather than taking drugs this healthy alternative can work wonders.
