Chia Seeds: Benefits and Uses


The health benefits and uses of Chia Seeds.

1. Chia seeds have become one of the most popular superfoods in the health community in recent years.

They come from the Salvia Hispanica, a flowering plant in the mint family.

2. They were used by the Aztecs, Mayans and Native Americans as a source of energy. 

3. They are an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids which makes them a popular alternative to fish such as salmon.

4. The seeds have become very popular in vegan and vegetarian dishes, as they can be used for all kinds of recipes.

5. They contain a very high amount of polyphenols (antioxidants.) which been shown to destroy free radicals in the blood.This also means that they can be used for anti-aging and protecting the skin from losing elasticity.

6. Chia seeds are used as an alternative to eggs. This is great for those who have high cholesterol and wish to avoid eggs.  

7. The seeds have the ability to regulate cholesterol which will protect your heart in the long term. Also lowering the blood pressure in the process.

8. Scientific studies have shown that these seeds can prevent insulin resistance, and even reverse the effects of diabetes.

9. People suffering with cervical and breast cancer may also benefit from eating chia seeds regularly, as they have been shown to destroy cancer cells. 

10. They contain beneficial amounts of protein, omega 3, omega 6, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese and vitamins A, B, E and D.

11. The seeds are very absorbent, and will help you to feel fuller after a meal. This may prevent overeating, and aid weight loss.

12. They are one of the richest sources of fibre in the world. This improves digestion and relieves constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

13. They are great for the bones and teeth, due to the high amounts of phosphorus, magnesium, protein and calcium. Making them excellent for vegetarian and vegan diets.

14. When exercising the body uses a large amount of energy. The healthy carbs in chia seeds provide a great energy boost and are therefore used by many athletes. The protein and minerals also help to build muscle in process.

15. To use chia seeds, you can cook them into many dishes. Or you can make a chia seed water by soaking 50 grams of chia seeds in 1 litre of water. Infuse this for one hour and drink.

16. You can also blend them into smoothies, or add a tablespoon to your healthy juices, seen in our other videos.

17. I also recommend making a delicious chia breakfast cereal. You can soak some seeds in a milk or your choice overnight, and then add some chopped nuts, fruit and cinnamon for a tasty breakfast.

18. You can introduce a sprinkling of chia seeds to your healthy salads, to add texture. Or to thicken soups and gravy. 

19. They are also used to make cereal bars, cakes, pancakes, jams, cookies and many more. Be creative and enjoy all the possibilities.
